Jewish Journal’s “Video Jew” Jay Firestone brings us his video journalism about elections in addition to his thoughts on meatball-schwarma subs and, uh, mah-jong. Enjoy.
In May I reviewed the new JUF site and the blog that Aaron Cohen is writing. The good news? The JUF blog now accepts comments… however the comments are disappearing into a moderation queue without warning the commenter. I think. I left a comment and it disappeared, but was not posted.
Kudos for adding comments! A step [...]
A few years ago, UJA became UJC, and not much changed except a whole lot of bureaucratic shuffling and money being uselessly wasted. Messing with brand identity is risking, like adding “New” before “Coke.” Now The Forward reports that the Foundation for Jewish Culture has dropped the “National” from their name, apparently indicating a departure [...]
Spertus to launch MA in Jewish Professional Studies
This is an interesting development. Instead of a degree from a “Jewish Studies Department” or an MSW, now people who want to work in eternal servitude of their people (you fools! don’t do it!) with an accompanying eternal lack of thanks can learn how to do it! Spertus’ [...]
Well, really its 2 older shuls that are in some way reinventing themselves.
Makom Shalom, formerly in the South Loop, has temporarily relocated to thge Roscoe Village/North Center area at Epiphany Church on Bradley and Damen, a few short blocks from my apartment. Yay, another option!
Then it seems there’s a new group operating out of the [...]
Adam asked me to give my professional opinion about the updated JUF site. Let me say that I am a donor to JUF and traveled to Israel with them last year.
1. RSS: This is a huge leap forward for any website and I’m thrilled to see the JUF using it. RSS is to the new [...]
JUF.org has a redesign. A bit sterile, but hey, it has RSS feeds and a new calendar function. JUF News editor Aaron Cohen even has a blog, The Heart of the Matter.
But uh, where’s the comments section? Is someone shy about feedback? It sorta looks like a cleaned up version of the last [...]
Lilith “independent, Jewish & frankly feminist” Magazine is on the search for a new webmaster (or webmarm?) to work part-time, a few hours per week to focus not so much on design, but mainly on techie upkeep, moving the site from one server to another and setting up an additional e-commerce system. Later, they might [...]

Teva (not related to the national Teva group) is a new eco-Jews group that’s been started by a couple Temple Sholom folks. Its about friggin’ time. Doing it during Sukkot would have of course been better, but I”m glad its at last getting started.
From Hildie Cohen-
The Teva meeting is coming up! We have [...]
I”m new to this blog, but you’ll get to know me quickly. I”m the kvetcher, the one who bitches and moans about crap everyone else is to scared to bring up lest they bite the hand that feeds them. I don’t care because I’ve got no investment.
So just in time for the High Holidays, I [...]
Hey Everybody,
Menachem Cohen here. It’s about time I introduce myself. I was born and raised in Chicago and the surrounding environs. I’m 37 and married to Wendy Lauter. We are expecting our first child in Dec (due date is the 15th, the first night of Channukah, but so few kids arrive on due dates). Currently [...]
On my way home from last night’s KFAR event, I got to thinking about privilege and being an American Jew. A young Israeli woman stood up to speak. In the last few weeks, she has lost three friends in the war, her sister is fighting in Lebanon, and her family is in a bomb shelter.
And us? [...]
There is an event at Temple Shalom this sunday. The Federation is bringing the wife and parents of a kidnapped Israeli soldier to speak. The goal is emergency funds for Israel. I’ve gotten five or six emails, phone calls, and personal invitations. If anyone is going, Leah must be going.
Well. I’m not.
It isn’t that I’m not supporting [...]
Synablog highlights a speech Rabbi Sharon Brous of IKAR given at UCLA Hillel as part of Los Angeles’s People of the Book Festival in late April of this year that makes some concise, bold statements that ring so very truly.
“It seems to me that our community has made some real miscalculations in addressing the growing [...]
JUF has published an excellent essay by Doni Remba of Chicago Peace Now that outlines what the Geneva Convention actually says about civilian casualties in areas in which military targets are nested, the targeting thereof and the application of these rules pertaining to the current hostilities. Israel is, according to Remba, well within [...]
I’m just about rallied out.
Last week I had an impromtu rally with two friends on the beach in Chicago. Three people probably doesn’t make a rally, but it gave me time to talk and pray with friends. And for me, a chance to sing Oseh Shalom.
Then on Monday I went to the Chicago Israel Solidarity [...]
I wrote a really long post in response to the New Jew question. Apparently, it wasn’t good enough–Typepad ate it for dinner. I’m too tired to write it again, but I will leave you with this.
No matter what “they” fund, they better buy a lot of name tags. Yes, I’m talking, “Hello My Name is.” [...]
