Argentine Jews: Tehran ‘em a new one

Posted on Sunday 29 October 2006

Every Jew has a cousin in Buenos Aires. 200,000 Jews live in Argentina, and a dozen years ago, the world was shocked when a bombing rocked the Argentine Jewish community. The AMIA (essentially a JCC) was reduced to rubble in an explosion that killed 85 and injured 200. It followed the 1992 bombing of the Isaeli Embassy that killed 29.

It was long rumored that Hizbollah and Iran were behind the bombings and that government cover-ups kept the truth from coming out. A decade later and a new government, there may finally be justice.

In late August 2003, Hade Soleimanpour, Iran’s ambassador to Argentina at the time of the July 18, 1994, bombing, was arrested in Britain. Hade must have spilled the beans. That and the dismissal of a federal judge that seemed to be impeding the investigation (and will soon be charged for it) must have done it.

Wednesday, Argentine prosecutors indicted Hizbollah and Iran for the bombing and asked a federal judge to order the arrest of former Iranian President Hashemi Rafsanjani and seven others in connection with the event. Finally, a whif of Justice.
