Hip Hop Sulha @ SOB’s

Posted on Thursday 14 September 2006

Last night as part of the Oyhoo Festival in NYC, Jewish and Arab MC’s took the stage together for a “Sulha” an Arab tribal tradition of reciprocal gestures and an eventual get together to set aside differences.  Israeli MC Sagel 59 and Arab-Isreali MC Saz took the stage and rocked the house along with Chicago’s own Yuri Lane, Shannan Street of Hadag Nahash,  Y-Love and others.  It was a great show, though a bit underattended.  Pictures are coming.  Jewschool, Corner Prophets and Modular Moods presented.  A cool event.

Afterwards, as I took the 1 Train back to the Upper West Side, I met and chatted with a young Jordanian woman of Palestinian descent about the event.  She loved it, as did her Arab friends, and said she met and talked with many Jews there, saying she often couldn’t tell the difference between the two…  Very telling.  was hopeful about the event and its prospects for Peaceful Coexistence and partnership, and planned to tell her friends and family in Amman about the event… Let’s hope the same helods true for folks in Ramallah and Tel Aviv…
