Last Thursday I headed down to the Chicago Indiefest Chicago to check out a long awaited screening of Awake Zion, Monica Haim’s film about the connections between Rasta and Jewish cultures. It was an interesting and enjoyable piece, though I don’t think it went nearly far enough or dove nearly as deeply as I would have liked. It left out dozens of performers doing cool stuff to connect these two cultures, like Shotei HaNevua and Idan Reichel to name just two. It was attended by no more than 20 people including several who came to view the short film before it, and I only found out about it 2 hours before the screening.
I’m gonna try and set up another screening, but here’s a link to the trailer. And in the spirit of the film, here’s some Jewish Reggae Music by King Djnago’s Roots and Culture.
