Geneva, Proportionality and Law

Posted on Tuesday 25 July 2006

JUF has published an excellent essay by Doni Remba of Chicago Peace Now that outlines what the Geneva Convention actually says about civilian casualties in areas in which military targets are nested, the targeting thereof and the application of these rules pertaining to the current hostilities.  Israel is, according to Remba, well within the International guidelines,  and that Hizballah combatants and their practice of using civilians areas as shields, are not.  That is, Hizballah is committing  War Crimes on the Lebanese, not the Israelis.  Interesting stuff and  not from the most hawkish of sources.  Remba also outlines the potential outcomes for the campaign which are the determining factor in proportinality.  Read it here.
