I got an email from former Chicagoan Shai Ronen about the situation in Israel, and how its affecting things in Haifa. Its a revealing look at how Israel really cares about its people, how Israelis are pulling together and how real these rocket attacks are:
Another day, another 20 rockets. Life tries to go on. Thankfully, no one killed today in Haifa. One person killed in Nahariya (further North). A lot of false alarms today. Every small noise of an accelerating truck or car coming by sounds like the beginning of a siren. It’s tiresome. I worked today in three places.
Once again on the way from my mother’s friend’s house we heard rockets falling. We parked the car and ran for cover. We had to chose if to run into a nearby hotel, looking for shelter, which will take more time (not to mention cross the street with people who are not really sane in their driving when the sirens go off) or hide by the house next door. We hid by the building next to us.
So, here is some of the news you don’t hear:* Israeli theaters and museums in the center opened their doors at half price or free to people who come from the North.
* Random people are constantly calling radio and TV stations to invite people to stay with them until the crisis is over.
* Israeli bands such as the Dag Nachash, singers like David Broza, Sarale Sharon, and many more singers and performers, are driving between shelters in the North to provide support and perform to people living in shelters. They hop between shelters where there are 20-30 people and perform to boost their morale.
* The trash is piling up in the streets.
* The media is censored to avoid giving information to the enemy on the exact location of the missiles falling which will lead to more direct hits.
* People are moving to the center of Israel temporarily.
* People are scared, but resilient.
* Hizbollah militia are trying to inifiltrate Israel
* People are still smiling and laughing.
* This is a good time for dating. The only problem is that everything is closed.I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for your support. It’s hard going through this and your e-mails are helping keep my morale high and help me face the continuous fear. Keep your hopes high and don’t have an illusion that this will end soon. Our enemy is determined and has no boundaries. The battle will go on until they break. Feel free to forward these e-mails to more people. The world needs to know what is going on here.
Not just the daily media biases.
Take care,
Shai
Keep your head down, Shai, but your chin up. We’re all with you.

Hi Shai,
I have always loved the heart of the Israelis. Everyone is trained, and everyone knows from where we come and what needs to be done to keep surviving. I work with people from a diverse range of cultures and religions. We know this is the act of a few who instigate war. We hope peaceful coexistance can happen there as it does here. Rememer that people really can celebrate each others diversity. Until peace happens, remember that many people wish you good health and safety. Always remember the ruach and sing, dance and celebrate life.
Thanks for sending the email.. It was good to read from someone, as I have not yet heard from my friends over there.
