Searching for crumbs

Posted on Tuesday 19 April 2005

Does it strike anyone else as funny that at Pesach, we scour our homes and lives for chametz crumbs of which to rid ourselves, then by Rosh Hashana our pockets are full enough of them again for Tashlich…

The beauty of truth and Judaism, is that Hashem has given us holiday, each with its own significance and its unique issue to work on. Getting rid of chametz and not eating chametz for a week does not mean we should never eat chametz again. In fact the opposite is true. During Pesach (and at NO other time) chametz represents the evil that is naturally within us, our Yetzer HoRa – our Evil Inclination. It represents all of our character flaws such as arrogance and haughtiness, jealousy, unbridled passion and lust. When we stop something for a holy reason, we purify ourselves. During Pesach, we prove we are different than animals, and that we can give up our evil inclinations. Once we have cleared our homes and ourselves for the prescribed 7 days, we not only can, but are commanded to eat chometz once again. Except for Pesachhametz never again represents our evil inclination. Rosh Hashana has a whole different purpose. It is about teshuva and repentence. Chametz is insignificant during Rosh Hashana. There is no mitzvah of chametz or not chametz in Rosh Hashana.
