The Sarah Aroeste show was great and the band were troopers. Over 200 people showd for the event on a Sunday night. Still between talent fees, travel, promotion and production, we managed to lose money even though it was more than 2/3 filled. This is because arts organizations generally operate on budgets whose income stream relies only 40% on ticket revenues. Fortunate companies have 10% from concessions, rentals and other earned income streams, while at least 50% is contributed income. In the Jewish community, we have arts supporters galore. We also have funding organizations whose sole raison d’etre is to fund continuity and cultural programs. Yet KFAR remains unfunded by either group, and not for plack of asking. Now, other major and even some minor communities have their Jewish cultural programs funded at least in part by their Federation or JCC. So, I ask, why not Chicago? Thoughts?
In the interim, have a laugh at Carin Davis’ expense. Her latest column is, as always, fantastic.
